The Series

The Good Night Our World boardbook series is designed to celebrate special places in a way that young children, ages 0-5, can easily relate to and enjoy with their families. All the books are written and illustrated with a simplicity that captures some of the “essence” of each subject and place.

A portion of the sale of all books in the series is donated to help babies in need.

Every book is printed in bright colors on high-quality board and laminated to endure the attention of young children. All books are 6” x 6”, making for large 12” x 6” open page spreads.

Each title takes its readers through the passage of a day (“good morning,” “good afternoon,” “good evening,” and “good night”) and the seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter). Children are introduced the practice of using polite salutations and greetings, while being lulled to a good night’s sleep.

The series is, in part, inspired by Walt Whitman’s poems, such as the classic book Leaves of Grass and the famous poem “Song of Myself,” in which the poet catalogs item after item, in a process whereby the mere naming of each item draws attention to it and thus imbues in with a sense of import. To a degree, the Good Night Our World series tries to recognize and celebrate the world in a Whitmanesque spirit. The poet writes:

Where the pear-shaped balloon is floating aloft, (floating in it
myself and looking composedly down,) …

y
Where the she-whale swims with her calf and never forsakes it,
y

Where the heifers browse, where geese nip their food with short jerks,

Where sun-down shadows lengthen over the limitless and lonesome prairie,

Where herds of buffalo make a crawling spread of the square miles

far and near,

Where the humming-bird shimmers, where the neck of the long-lived

swan is curving and winding,

Where the laughing-gull scoots by the shore, where she laughs her

near-human laugh,

y
